that artificial intelligence (AI) will impact teaching and learning in and outside of the classroom.  The impact of generative AI may be positive, negative, or neutral depending on the unique circumstances of each use case.  RISD aims to enable transparent, responsible and safe use of AI technologies while emphasizing and encouraging academic integrity, critical thinking, deep understanding, cybersecurity and data privacy.  \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8564488 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8564488\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"use\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Academic Use<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d6b451 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d6b451\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAI-generated content is not considered a student\u2019s own work. It is important to understand assigned material and complete assignments appropriately.  If a student chooses to use AI-generated content, with consent from the teacher, it must be cited appropriately. MLA, APA, and Chicago have all issued guidance on how to cite AI-generated content. Any time a student uses AI tools it should be as a supplement, and cited appropriately, rather than a replacement of the work.  Furthermore, do not assume AI responses are always correct. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b208358 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b208358\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAll student work is still subject to RISD\u2019s guidelines and expectations for plagiarism.  See the RISD Student Code of Conduct for expectations and consequences related to plagiarism.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ed4635 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4ed4635\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTeachers should model appropriate digital citizenship related to using AI tools.  Examples include:\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f703a0c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f703a0c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using prompts to generate ideas to explore further.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using prompts to review and discuss content.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using prompts to elicit feedback on an idea.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using prompts to explain something differently or clarify.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4b45cfd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4b45cfd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhile a teacher may use AI content to enhance their lesson and meet the learning objectives, teachers should not assign students to access AI content, like ChatGPT, Claude, and similar platforms, as part of the assignment, as these tools have age limit restrictions and are currently not allowed to students on the RISD Network.. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43b9805 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"43b9805\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.risd.org\/instructionaltechnology\/wp-content\/uploads\/DigitalCitizenship25-26.pdf\"><strong>As a part of the digital citizenship curriculum<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, secondary students engage in a lesson specific to AI literacy during the month of December. These lessons are facilitated by each campus. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b2ac45c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b2ac45c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"data\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Safety and Data Privacy<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-edfd8bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"edfd8bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRISD prioritizes keeping students and data safe.  Staff should make students aware of data privacy concerns, as well as when it is appropriate to provide personal information online. Personal information should never be shared with AI tools, like ChatGPT.  \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5cfeba4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5cfeba4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tUsers should never include personal information, including names, phone numbers, addresses, social security numbers, grades, license plate number, birthdates, or anything else that may be used to identify an individual. Generative AI learns, in part, from data provided in prompts and could potentially share personally identifiable information with other users under certain circumstances. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8842ab5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8842ab5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"tools\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">AI Tools<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-94405f3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"94405f3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRISD internet filters block generative AI tools for all student use in RISD.  If a staff member requests an AI tool to be unblocked, Instructional Technology works with Teaching &#038; Learning to evaluate the tool\u2019s alignment to the curriculum and what is needed to use it.  Tools that require a student login or have age requirements are not unblocked.  For example, ChatGPT specifically does not allow users under the age of 13.  Students between the ages of 13 and 18, must have parent\/guardian permission to create an account.  RISD will not establish accounts for students in ChatGPT or similar tools with these restrictions. Because of the age restrictions, parents\/guardians are encouraged to supervise students when using these tools.    \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39d89c3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"39d89c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAfter a pilot year evaluating AI tools for student use, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/schoolai.com\/\">RISD adopted the use of SchoolAI<\/a><\/strong>. Teachers have training opportunities on using SchoolAI with students to align to lessons they are teaching and help meet their instructional goals.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3668b4e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3668b4e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSchoolAI is a tool that allows teachers to create custom and personalized experiences for students that leverage AI.  Teachers access SchoolAI through ClassLInk and can assign activities to students. Student access is moderated by the teacher. Students will access the tool through a link or QR provided by the teacher. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a650db8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a650db8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStaff have access and may, independently, use sites to enhance their lessons and model responsible use. Staff must respect intellectual property and exercise judgment related to AI tools and copyrighted materials. Just because copying and pasting into AI tools is available, does not mean you have the right to.
