This summer for the first time, RISD will provide a personalized summer school program to more than 130 refugee students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis innovative summer school program affords RISD another opportunity to connect with our refugee families in a way that may not happen during the course of the regular school year,\u201d said Maria Seid, the RISD Refugee Service Program learning administrator. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
RISD spent the final weeks of school recruiting students on campuses and also visiting some student residences to encourage enrollment in the summer school program that runs from June 5 to June 23. Staff members were trained by Maria Seid to be equipped with the skills necessary to support this dynamic student group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vision of the Refugee Service Program is to have small, targeted instruction centered around educating the whole child. The curriculum will incorporate literacy, art, STEM, and field trips to engage students in a variety of immersive activities with real-world applications of the learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe know our students need specific and catered supports, and this summer school program will ensure we help enrich student learning,\u201d said RISD Refugee Service Program Administrator Bushra Haq. \u201cWe look forward to helping our RISD students gain the skills and tools they need for academic and social success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
