{"id":31504,"date":"2024-10-10T12:27:25","date_gmt":"2024-10-10T17:27:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.risd.org\/home\/?p=31504"},"modified":"2024-10-25T07:20:06","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T12:20:06","slug":"familiarise-dyslexia-awareness-what-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.risd.org\/home\/familiarise-dyslexia-awareness-what-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"familiaRISE &#8211; Dyslexia Awareness: What To Know","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This familiaRise segment comes from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.risdsagepta.org\">RISD Special and Gifted Education PTA (SAGE PTA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our PTA is grateful for RISD\u2019s commitment to dyslexia services, including the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/web.risd.org\/home\/risd-dyslexia-training-center-earns-elite-dual-accreditation\/\">dual accreditation achieved<\/a> by the RISD Dyslexia Training Center!&nbsp; Did you know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dyslexia is lifelong (though intervention can help students learn to read!) and it is experienced by <a href=\"https:\/\/dyslexiaida.org\/dyslexia-basics\/\">15-20% of people<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students must receive an identification of dyslexia before receiving specialized instruction to remediate their reading process. Teachers, parents and administrators play vital roles in the <a href=\"https:\/\/tea.texas.gov\/academics\/special-student-populations\/special-education\/texas-dyslexia-handbook.pdf\">identification process under Texas law<\/a>. If parents suspect their child may have a learning disability, they may request a full evaluation from RISD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dyslexia has no impact on intelligence and occurs in <a href=\"https:\/\/dyslexia.yale.edu\/dyslexia\/dyslexia-faq\/\">learning at all levels<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nationally,<a href=\"https:\/\/dyslexiaida.org\/english-learners-and-dyslexia\/\"> English Learners<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.yale.edu\/news-article\/new-study-highlights-potential-missed-diagnoses-of-dyslexia-in-african-american-students\/\">African American students<\/a>, and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2024\/09\/dyslexia-myths#:~:text=Still,%20dyslexia%20often%20goes%20unidentified,above%20proficiency%20levels%20in%20reading.\">non-white populations<\/a> are underrepresented among those identified with dyslexia; increasing awareness is important for accurate identification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accommodations for dyslexia\u2013 as for any disability\u2013 do not put students at an \u201cadvantage,\u201d but rather remove barriers to <a href=\"https:\/\/dyslexiaida.org\/accommodations-for-students-with-dyslexia\/\">provide equal access<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contrary to myth, dyslexia <a href=\"https:\/\/dyslexiahelp.umich.edu\/parents\/learn-about-dyslexia\/what-is-dyslexia\/debunking-common-myths-about-dyslexia#:~:text=Fact%3A%20Many%20young%20children%20reverse,is%20a%20symptom%20of%20dyslexia.\">does not involve seeing things backwards<\/a>.
