John Bryant is on the House Public Education committee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Priority legislation was filed impacting public education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Texas Senate Passes SB 4 on Property Tax Relief with Bipartisan Support<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing one of the Governor &amp; Lt. Governor\u2019s priorities to reduce property taxes, SB 4 increases the homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000 saving the average Texas homeowner approximately $300 per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voters must approve the increase in the homestead exemption, and <a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/tlodocs\/89R\/billtext\/html\/SJ00002E.htm\">SJR 2<\/a> (also passed by the Senate) is the enabling legislation that will provide voters with the option to approve (or oppose) the measure on the November 2025 General Election. (R), Hinojosa, Gina (D), Hunter, Todd (R), Kerwin, Helen (R), Leach, Jeff (R), Leo Wilson, Terri (R), Schoolcraft, Alan (R), Talarico, James (D)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Permanent Standing Subcommittee on Academic and Career-Oriented Education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Chair<\/em><strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>Ashby, Trent (R)<br><em>Vice Chair<\/em><strong>:<\/strong> Talarico, James (D)<br><em>Members<\/em><strong>:<\/strong> Hunter, Todd (R), Schoolcraft, Alan (R)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Priority Legislation Filed This Week That Impacts Public Education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>SB 10 &#8211; <\/strong>Relating to the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SB 11 \u00a0&#8211; <\/strong>Relating to a period of prayer and reading of the Bible or other religious text in public schools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SB 13 \u00a0&#8211;\u00a0 <\/strong>Relating to a school district\u2019s library materials and catalog, the creation of a local school library advisory councils, and parental rights regarding public school library catalogs and access by the parent\u2019s child to library materials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that the House has committees in place, they will begin working on their priority items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Next Week in Austin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As of today, no bills have been set for hearings regarding education.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Remember:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Speaker Burrows, in an effort to bring House members together (especially Republicans), appointed several Republicans who had supported his opponent for Speaker, as committee chairmen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now that the House has organized their committees, we will see focus on their priorities (vouchers, property tax relief and hopefully school finance).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s still early in the session, and many bills with significant impact to RISD have not been filed yet.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Legislative Corner will be published periodically throughout the 89th legislative session.
