The information in this letter includes important safety tips and recommendations on how a parent can talk to his\/her child and others about the safe storage of firearms at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0713b644cdde41ec2fe8ef28582a7bff\" style=\"color:#005596;font-size:24px;font-style:normal;font-weight:700\"><strong>Did you know?:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Texas, <a href=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/Docs\/PE\/htm\/PE.46.htm#46.13\">it\u2019s against the law to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm.<\/a> Under <a href=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/Docs\/PE\/htm\/PE.46.htm#46.13\">Texas Penal Code 46.13<\/a>, a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Failed to secure the firearm; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Safe gun storage at home is critical to preventing suicide, unintentional shootings, and other tragedies. <a href=\"https:\/\/safegunstoragetexas.com\/\">You can learn more and find additional resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a reminder, firearms are not allowed in any of our RISD schools or
