{"id":43850,"date":"2026-04-24T09:07:02","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T14:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.risd.org\/home\/?p=43850"},"modified":"2026-04-24T09:07:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T14:07:03","slug":"board-workshop-report-4-23-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.risd.org\/home\/board-workshop-report-4-23-26\/","title":{"rendered":"Board Workshop Report","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>During the April 23, 2026 Board Workshop, RISD leadership presented several important updates to the Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Algebra for All<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This strategic initiative focuses on providing early access to Algebra 1 by 8th grade. Since its 2018 launch all eight RISD junior high and middle schools now offer Algebra 1 for all students. Enrollment has more than doubled from 960 to 2,061 students, with significant gains in participation from underrepresented and economically disadvantaged student groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Demographic Gains: Enrollment doubled for economically disadvantaged students to 44% and African American students to 17%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Testing Outcomes: 100% of 7th graders and 79% of 8th graders passed the 2025 Algebra 1 EOC exam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>District Success: The Class of 2025 earned over 4,800 college math credits, with 97% meeting CCMR standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The district plans to further this success by introducing new curricula from 6th grade through Algebra 1 to bolster college and career readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Budget and Compensation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The district is evaluating three primary raise options for the 2026-2027 school year, ranging in cost from $8.3 million to $10.8 million. To offset a projected budget deficit and declining enrollment, RISD identified $25.7 million in potential reductions, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Standardizing staffing models, reducing central and other costs ($8.7 million).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transitioning to 7- and 8-period secondary schedules ($7.2 million and $4.1 million, respectively).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reducing central and campus support positions ($5.7 million combined).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Two primary methods to increase revenue were proposed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>xPlore Tuition: Raising weekly afternoon rates by $5 \u2013 $6 to generate $350,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>VATRE: A proposed 3.17\u00a2 tax rate increase to generate $7.7 million in revenue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Construction Update: Middle School Transformation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the approval of Bond 2025, construction preparations are underway at Apollo and North Middle School<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phase 1 for Apollo is underway with preparations to begin construction taking place. Some of these preparations include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Securing the area of construction\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preparing the site for utilities and infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Installing construction fencing and arrival of portables, which will be occupied next school year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon Board approval, Phase 1 for North M.S. is scheduled to begin during the summer months. Construction preparations to take place during June through August include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Installing construction fencing fencing and mobilization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Installing portables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Site paving demolition and much more.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Staff and parent meetings are taking place during the remainder of the school year to provide updates to the community and together prepare for the construction scheduled as part of the Middle School Transformation Process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.risd.org\/home\/bond-2025-projects\/\"><strong>A new Bond 2025 Projects update webpage is now live<\/strong><\/a>, designed to keep the RISD community informed and up to date on the progress of Bond 2025 projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Secondary Scheduling<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning in the 2026\u20132027 school year, RISD secondary schools will transition from a block schedule back to a traditional 7\/8 period day. Until 2020-2021, RISD implemented a traditional 7 or 8 period school day. The block schedule was implemented to reduce transitions for health reasons as recommended by local health experts and as part of the district&#8217;s response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This transition is a critical budget decision to sustain programs, protect positions, and serve students.
