FAQs

When could this recommendation, if approved, take effect?

The earliest date could possibly be with the 2024-2025 school year.

What are the benefits of the new recommended 6-8 model?

  • TEKS alignments, as nearly all Texas school districts use K-5 and 6-8 TEKS.
  • Expanded opportunities in fine arts and athletics.
  • Accelerated opportunities in other areas, including CTE programming and sequencing.
  • Targeted student need and support for high school would start earlier, providing an opportunity and foundation for greater success.

Are 6th graders too young for junior high?

The case could be made that 6th graders are too old for elementary campuses, especially now that they house 3-year-old and 4-year-old Pre-K students.

Was cost a determining factor?

No, cost was not a determining factor. The best interests of students and their academic success was the lead consideration.

Why do we need to renovate all eight junior highs when they were built for grades 7-9?

Enrollment is larger now than 35 years ago when these campuses were built and today’s classroom looks nothing like they did then. Renovations and expansions will be necessary sooner rather than later regardless of grade configuration.
