Coordinated School Health (CSH)

What is CSH?

CSH is an integrated, systematic set of planned, sequential, school-affiliated strategies, activities, and services designed to advance student academic performance and promote their optimal Physical, Emotional, Social, and Educational development. It is a COLLABORATION of departments, teachers, staff, and students to meet the wellness of the WHOLE CHILD.

Human Growth and Development

The basic content of Richardson ISD’s human growth and development instruction includes reproduction, pregnancy, human development, building responsible relationships and risks of adolescent sexual activity. Content also includes information on communicable diseases such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD). Richardson’s human growth and development content is abstinence based and discusses abstinence as the only method that is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The content of Richardson’s human growth and development instruction is consistent with Texas Education Code, Title 119, Chapter 15 Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.

As a parent in RISD, you have a right to review curriculum materials and/or remove your child from any part of the district’s human sexuality instruction without penalty — but you need to be aware that you and your child are responsible for any TEKS missed. You can also participate in the development of curriculum. Richardson ISD has a School Health and Advisory Council (or SHAC) which makes health education curriculum recommendations to the School Board as needed.

Please contact the Health and PE Director for a SHAC application.
