The STEM and Innovation Department, in collaboration with quality leaders, teachers and strong university and industry partnerships, provides students with advanced STEM-focused academics, STEM learning experiences, and the support needed to graduate high school more prepared for college and career success.

The department of STEM and Innovation seeks to improve access to quality STEM education for all students in RISD, particularly students from groups that have historically been underserved in the STEM fields; including students in low income communities, diverse ethnicities, and females. The STEM and Innovation department provides teacher and leadership development, instructional support, and technical assistance to campuses as it relates to implementing STEM education and building and sustaining a STEM for ALL culture.

The STEM and Innovation Department provides leadership and support to campuses for integrating STEM, in collaboration with the following departments: Professional Learning, Teaching and Learning, College and Career Readiness, Career and Technical Education, and Accountability.

  • Build STEM for ALL culture
  • Provide STEM school leadership development
  • Facilitate the planning, development, and evaluation of districtwide curriculum aligned to the state standards for PBL instruction
  • Provide technical assistance in the development of campus STEM action plans
  • Research current trends and best practices for PreK-12 STEM instruction
  • Create, revise, and facilitate the development of STEM curriculum products
  • Review, pilot, and evaluate new STEM instructional materials.
  • Identify and purchase appropriate STEM instructional materials
  • Assist in the maintenance and distribution of STEM instructional resource materials.
  • Observe instruction and student learning, providing immediate feedback on pedagogy and STEM content
  • Conduct STEM learning walks
  • Ensure teachers successfully implement PBL units, and continue to integrate STEM lesson essentials into traditional instructional models
  • Align curriculum between high school, postsecondary, and industry experience requirements
  • Provide industry-informed STEM focused learning experiences (PBL, Work Based Learning, guest speakers, field trips, and industry certifications at every grade level
  • Provide student career exploration with business partners
  • Provide bridge programs to support grade transitions
  • Design and conduct data-driven professional development for STEM.
  • Communicate and collaborate with colleges and STEM industry and businesses to provide services and opportunities for externships and internships to teachers and students.
  • Coordinate district-level events to include STEM Family Nights, RAMS 101 Parent engagement events, Robotics Competitions
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the STEM Center at Berkner High School STEM Academy
