Acceleration

Overview

Acceleration is an intervention and means matching the level, complexity, and pace of the curriculum. This includes being placed with their intellectual peers so that they may take full advantage of their potential. When bright students are presented with curriculum developed for age-peers, they can become bored and unhappy and get turned off from learning. Students may test to move ahead one grade level in all subjects or single subjects. Testing, especially above-level testing, is highly effective in identifying students who would benefit from acceleration. For bright students, acceleration has long-term beneficial effects, both academically and socially.
