Per the Texas Education Agency, students are required to take the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) to measure academic performance at specific milestones during their school career.

At the elementary and junior high school levels, the STAAR program assesses:

  • Reading and math for all students in grades 3-8
  • Science for students in grades 5 and 8
  • Social studies for students in grade 8

For high school students, there are five STAAR End-of-Course (EOC) assessments:

  • English I
  • English II
  • Algebra I*
  • Biology
  • U.S. History

*Non-high school students taking an EOC tested course will take the EOC assessment the year the course is completed.

TEA developed STAAR to meet state and federal requirements. More information can be found at the TEA website.
