Bond Cycles Explained
RISD operates on a five-year cycle for bond projects, which follows the community-developed Bond Guiding Principles. The district typically replaces items with an expected useful life of more than one year through bond program funds. Examples of these items include: air conditioning/heating units, computers, service vehicles, roofs and band instruments, safety and security tools, among others.
The district schedules upgrades/renovations of facilities to accommodate schools, programs or security requirements, as needed. One example is when freshmen programming was moved to three of the high schools after the approval of the 2001 bond. Additionally, facility renovations for the past decade focused on the oldest schools in RISD first – 1950's schools in the 2001 bond and 1960's schools in the 2006 bond.
