Elementary Magnet and Choice Application Process

Online Application Opens on Dec. 1

  • Application closes February 28, 2026.
  • The magnet application is for students who will be in grades KN through 6 for the 2026-27 school year. PK is a separate, qualifying and assignment process.
  • The choice application for Dual Language Immersion: Two-Way Program is open to students who will be in PK through 1st grade for the 2026-27 school year.  The PK qualification process opens April 1, 2026.
  • Please note that when submitting an application for a current RISD student, you will need your child’s student ID number and date of birth to create an application account.

Students not currently attending an RISD school: Home school, private school or students new to RISD may also apply, as long as you live within RISD. The system will prompt you to enter your student’s first name and last name, date of birth and address. It will create a temporary ID for you to use in the system.

Lottery Assignments Emailed March 31

All assignments are made by random selection based on the preferences indicated on the application and the space available in the grade for your student(s). At the elementary level, we prioritize keeping siblings together, as long as parents submit their application in a timely manner.
  • Magnet applicants must meet and maintain eligibility requirements to have sibling priority.
  • Choice applicants do not have eligibility requirements, other than age and grade level.
You will have a couple of weeks to notify the school if you accept the assignment. RISD will provide transportation for students who live more than two miles from the magnet.
