High School Magnet Application Process
Online Application Opens on Jan. 13 at 9 p.m.
The Magnet Application for RHS is available online. To access your record, you
need your 6-digit, student’ ID # and DOB to logon.
Applications due by Jan. 31, 2026.
Students not currently attending an RISD school: Home school, private school or students new to RISD may also apply, as long as you live within RISD. The system will prompt you to enter your student’s first name and last name, date of birth and address. It will create a temporary ID for you to use in the system.
Eligibility Requirements
Attendance
At least 90%.
Behavior
No more than 3 referrals. No suspensions or expulsions.
Academics
At least an 80 average in core subjects; no failures in any subject.
Review Requirements
Requirements for submitting an application include established grades; however, grade parameters are subject to change, depending on the applicant pool and space availability. Students enrolled in PreAP classes may add five points for passing semester grades to reach the minimum grade prerequisite(s).
- Magnet applicants must live within the boundaries of the RISD when submitting their application, completing the interview, enrolling in RHS and attending the school.
- Magnet applicants should be passing all their classes for the fall semester and have a minimum combined 80 average in English, math, science and social studies.
- Additional requirements vary by magnet strand.

The online application includes the following sections:
- General Application—completed and signed by the student and parent/guardian. You must also indicate your choice of magnet programs: Communications, Culinary Arts, Theatre Performance, Technical Theatre, Studio Arts, Photography, Law, Science, Computer Science, Robotics and Manufacturing. You may only apply for one magnet strand unless applying for Science. If you apply for two, one of them must be the Science Magnet.
- Policy and Guidelines for RHS Magnet Students—student and parent/guardian sign electronically.
- Magnet Program Application(s)—specific to the student’s choice of magnet programs, along with any individual requirements outlined.
- Students not currently enrolled in an RISD school must attach additional documents, as outlined in the Online App.

Select Your Interview Time When You Complete the Online App. Each Magnet Choice requires an interview except Science.
- Feb. 7: Communications, Computer Science, Culinary Arts, Photography, Studio Arts
- Feb. 21: Law, Manufacturing, Robotics, Theatre Performance, Theatre Tech
- Jan. 13 – Feb. 10: Science applicants submit their data in Schoology.
Notifications
RHS notifies you prior to Spring Break. After student acceptance into the magnet program, the RHS Magnet Counselor will contact students regarding their course schedule for the next school year.
