Property, Casualty and Liability Insurance

A Texas school district, as an arm of the state government, is immune from liability regarding accidents that occur on school grounds or any place that is under the jurisdiction of the school district, except liability incurred from the operation and use of school-owned motor vehicles.

The RISD purchases motor vehicle liability insurance to protect against claims for its automobile property damage and automobile liability exposures for vehicular accidents involving district owned vehicles.

The RISD does not purchase liability insurance for other types of accidents/incidents such as medical bills for a student injured on school grounds, replacement of a windshield broken by a rock thrown from a district mower, etc. The purchase of such liability insurance to protect against a liability, for which state law provides immunity, would be an improper use of funds. RISD carries workers’ compensation insurance to provide benefits to employees who are injured in the course and scope of their employment.

Motor Vehicle Accidents

In accordance with RISD policies and procedures, all accidents/incidents involving district owned or rented vehicles that result in property damage should be reported immediately. The written report should be submitted within 3 days of the accident/incident at RiskManagement@risd.org. For additional information, contact the District Fleet Safety Specialist at 469-593-0041.

Student Accident Insurance

The District cooperates in a program to offer low-cost accident insurance to students. Students or parents pay the premium for the coverage if they choose to participate. Soon after the school year begins, parents will have an opportunity to purchase this low-cost insurance. RISD is not responsible for treating injuries and cannot assume liability for any costs associated with an injury.

The Board of Trustees has authorized the purchase of accident, liability, or automobile insurance coverage for students or businesses involved in the District’s Career and Technology Education program where such coverage is required for the student’s participation.

RISD also maintains catastrophic insurance coverage that provides certain benefits to students who are severely injured during school-related activities. For information about eligibility, contact the District Safety Manager at 469-593-0346.
