The Social Studies Curriculum and Instruction team facilitates the development of a rigorous and relevant TEKS-aligned Social Studies Program taught with fidelity and continuity to prepare students to be informed critical thinkers and responsible citizens in a global society.

The primary purpose of social studies is to help students develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.

If you have any concerns or suggestions, don’t hesitate to contact the Social Studies team.

Social Studies Instruction

Rigorous Social Studies instruction provides authentic student learning experiences through analysis of primary and secondary source materials. Students practice listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking like a social scientist to help them learn about the community and the world. As students learn, they draw conclusions about the past and make sense of the world around them.

In social studies, students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 build a foundation in history, geography, economics, government, citizenship, culture, science, technology and society, and social studies skills. The content, appropriate to each grade level or course, enables students to understand the importance of patriotism, function effectively in a free enterprise society, and appreciate the fundamental democratic values of our state and nation, as referenced in the Texas Education Code (TEC), §28.002(h).

The Social Studies department offers, through community partners, various opportunities for students to practice real-world experiences by participating in engaging TEKS aligned trips and activities.

Our team supports teachers and administrators through on-going professional learning on high quality social studies instruction. In addition, we provide resources for required observances such as Constitution Day and Voter Registration.
