Newcomer Center

Overview

The Richardson ISD Newcomer Center is a central facility where students new to RISD are assessed for English language proficiency if a language other than English is indicated on the home language survey upon enrollment. The assessments assist RISD in determining which district schools, programs and/or services are appropriate for the student. In addition to administering language assessments, the Newcomer Center also determines if a child meets eligibility requirements for free Pre-K. Please visit the Pre-K website for more information.

The enrollment process for every student in RISD begins at the neighborhood school.

Steps for enrollment and Newcomer Center appointments:

  1. Parents must complete RISD’s online enrollment process
  2. Then visit or contact the neighborhood to schedule an appointment if:
    • Your child is enrolling for the first time in a Texas public school and a language other than English is indicated on the Home Language Survey, or
    • Interested in Pre-K

Parents unsure of their neighborhood school may visit the RISD School Finder. Parents should come to the Newcomer Center after being scheduled by their neighborhood school.
