Science
Introduction
In Richardson ISD, we believe science is best learned by doing science. Our classrooms prioritize hands-on, active learning experiences that engage students in meaningful scientific thinking, exploration, and discovery. Rooted in the RISD Learner Framework, our approach draws on the 5E model of science instruction to move students from curiosity and wonder to collaboration, application, and reflection.
In every student-teacher interaction, we challenge students to act, think, and communicate like scientists.
THINK Like Scientists
Students investigate phenomena, use evidence to develop and support ideas, and engage in checks for understanding that help them make sense of their learning.
ACT Like Scientists
Students are active participants in their learning. They investigate, explore, model, create, and reflect while using scientific notebooks to record and develop their thinking.
COMMUNICATE Like Scientists
Students use science every day through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. They develop academic vocabulary, engage in meaningful discourse, and communicate their ideas using evidence and scientific reasoning.
Our goal is more than teaching students what scientists have discovered. We want students to experience what it means to be a scientist. Through active learning, thoughtful questioning, collaboration, and communication, RISD students build the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make sense of the world around them—and to use science to shape the world ahead.
Instructional Resources
Our instructional resources provide a strong foundation for bringing this vision to life. In elementary science (K–5), teachers use McGraw Hill Texas Science, a highly engaging, standards-aligned resource designed to support meaningful science learning. In secondary science (6–12), teachers use Savvas as our core instructional resource.
Both resources were selected by our Science Instructional Materials Subcommittee through a rigorous adoption process designed to identify high-quality, standards-aligned materials that meet the needs of RISD students and teachers. These partnerships provide teachers with the resources, content, and support they need to design and deliver impactful, engaging science experiences for every student.
