Mathematics: Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills

RISD Mathematics curriculum is the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

The Mathematics Curriculum and Instruction team, through the work we do with teachers and campus leadership, supports the growth of all students in mathematics. Our goal is to see all students understand and recognize the importance of mathematics in their lives and find true success in this extremely important content area. We believe Mathematics is the gateway, not the gatekeeper.

The Mathematics team in Richardson ISD is focused on creating instructional tools that are clear and coherent. Our curriculum is the state mandated TEKS and our work is completely aligned to those student expectations. Through our work, we support teachers in using best practices for instruction and with resources that achieve the level of rigor required by the state.

These resources are intended for classroom use to meet individual student learning needs as necessary and are not considered a comprehensive curriculum for all students.

How can I help my student with mathematics at home?

You don’t need to be a math expert to help! Here are simple ways to support your student:

Ask them what they learned today and encourage them to explain it in their own words.
Have them practice short written explanations using “because…” or “this led to…”
Review class notes or online materials together for 5–10 minutes a few times a week.
Encourage reading (our math tests are also reading tests – lots of word problems!)
Celebrate small wins — reviewing just one topic a night for a few minutes adds up fast!
