Celebrating Black History Month

RISD Celebrates Black History Month

As we celebrate Black History Month, let’s educate ourselves and others on the important contributions and achievements of Black Americans throughout history.

This week, RISD’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Department and the Richardson Area Alliance of Black School Educators partnered for “Down For the Crown: A Courageous Conversation with TaShara Parker” to discuss hair discrimination, and its impact in schools and the workplace. Parker is an Emmy winning journalist with WFAA.

“This discussion helps students, staff, and community members better understand the the varying dynamics some students have with their hair and how we as educators shouldn’t inhibit student academic growth with punitive measures regarding a child’s hair,” RISD Executive Director Angie Lee said.

In our schools and classrooms everywhere, let’s take this opportunity to uplift and honor their legacy. #RISDBelieves #BlackHistoryMonth
