Lake Highlands Middle School on Track to Open in August 2024

Construction of the new Lake Highlands Middle School is progressing as planned, and the new building is projected to be ready to welcome students in August 2024.

The groundbreaking for the project will begin immediately after the 2021-22 school year with some utility infrastructure work and ground grading taking place.

The new three-story building will house up to 1,500 students. Demolition of the current structure is scheduled to occur between August 2024 and December 2024, as the Lake Highlands Middle School project is completed with final touches to parking lots, tennis courts, and landscaping set to be done by Dec. 31, 2024.

At its regular monthly meeting in April, the RISD board approved the guaranteed maximum price of $81 million, which is about $11 million higher than initially projected due to increased construction costs and supply chain disruptions that were exacerbated by the pandemic.
