Second-grade students at O. Henry Elementary recently experienced an extra-special author visit by one of their very own campus teachers.

Heather Breeckner, who has taught for over 18 years, captivated the 2nd graders by reading her newly published book, The Smallest Pig. The story encourages children to embrace what makes them unique and reminds them that their differences are actually a source of strength.
During her read-through, students were engaged in an inquiry process and encouraged to ask questions before, during, and after the reading. Their curiosity helped guide the discussion, making it a truly interactive and memorable experience.
Breeckner said she wrote the book years ago while in a teaching class in college, but hadn’t given it much thought again until she was home years later with her young son. During her time as a stay-at-home mom she spent some time completing the illustrations, inspired by the books of Eric Carle, who wrote and designed the Very Hungry Caterpillar and other childhood favorites.

Years passed, and Breeckner was inspired to get published when she became a grandmother. She wanted to read her own story to her 3-year-old granddaughter.
A special surprise is included at the back of the book – a step-by-step tutorial on how to create the cut-paper illustrations to encourage young readers to try it for themselves.
“This book is about celebrating who you are and what makes you different,” Breeckner said. “Sometimes, it means your unique traits make you the perfect fit. Use what makes you special to help others”.
