Ask anyone in the Moss Haven Elementary community about Ms. Crawford, the crossing guard, and you’ll hear the same thing: She is so kind and protective of every child. If she’s ever off work for the day, parents text to make sure she is doing okay! That’s the kind of impact she has on the neighborhood community.
When the community found out that Ms. Crawford needed a vehicle, the “Carpool Dads” sprung into action.
It started with Marcus Waither, who is the driving force behind the Carpool Dads, who volunteer their time to ensure smooth and safe drop-off every morning as a way to stay involved and help the school. Waither had the idea to start a fundraiser to help with a vehicle for the beloved crossing guard.
A few emails later, the MHE Dad’s Club had raised an incredible $6,800 in a matter of days.
Another super dad, Adam Tharp, who is the general manager of Lake Highlands Automotive, stepped in to find her the right vehicle, brought it up to shape, and sold it at a significant discount. On top of that, they even threw in a few free oil changes.
“It’s hard not to go on and on about the amazing community we have in the Moss Haven neighborhood,” says Tharp. “Much of which is due to the AMAZING team that shows up every day to love on our kids, keep them safe, and be all-around amazing role models. Ms. Crawford is a great example of that.” Lake Highlands Automotive has long been a champion for Lake Highlands area schools, sponsoring and supporting the learning community when the need arises.
With funds remaining, MHE dad Jeremy Graves led the effort to prepay Ms. Crawford’s auto insurance, ensuring she could drive away not only with a reliable car but with peace of mind.
This week, the dads gathered and surprised Ms. Crawford with her new vehicle!
In RISD, community isn’t just a buzzword. It’s the time, generosity, and commitment of the parents, teachers, staff – all those who show up in the smallest and biggest ways.
