RISD Board of Trustees Approves Academic Calendars for 26-27 and 27-28 School Years

Approved Calendars 2026-27 & 2027-28

During the December board meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the academic calendars for the next two school years.

District administrators submitted these calendars for approval recommendation after reviewing more than 2,500 survey responses from the RISD community.

Highlights of the approved 2026–27 academic calendar include a first day of school on August 12 and a last day on May 26. For the 2027–28 school year, classes will begin on August 11 and end on May 24.

Other highlights are:

2026-27 Calendar:

First Day of School:  August 12, 2026
Days Off in October: October 8-12 (3 days off)
Return Date in January (Students):  January 6, 2027
February Days Off: February 15
Last Day of School May 26, 2027

2027-28 Calendar:

First Day of School:  August 11, 2027
Days Off in October: October 7-11 (3 days off)
Return Date in January (Students):  January 5, 2028
February Days Off: February 14
Last Day of School May 24, 2028

The academic calendars for the next two school years were approved, including a proposed Additional Days School Year (ADSY) Calendar designed specifically for three RISD campuses: Dover Elementary, RISD Academy, and Audelia Creek Elementary.

The Texas Education Agency Additional Days School Year (ADSY) initiative provides formula funding to support school systems by adding additional instructional days at eligible campuses, to provide additional support to students.

If RISD’s exploratory idea to implement the ADSY initiative at Dover Elementary, RISD Academy, and Audelia Creek Elementary, is approved by TEA, these campuses would open their doors for students one day earlier than the rest of RISD schools, for activities such as Meet the Teacher, allowing students to become familiarized with the campus, and to engage the community in campus culture. Principals at these schools would work with their staff and community to together determine the structure of the additional day, as it would not be a full-day of instruction. Besides welcoming students one day earlier, the remaining academic calendar for these three campuses would remain the same as all other schools in RISD.

You will find student and staff holidays and other key dates on the approved calendars.
