This Week in RISD Sports – Oct. 24-28

berkner vball senior night

Last week, RISD athletes experienced key moments leading into the playoffs and some advanced to state, as the community once again stepped up and, yes, we had another week of wins.

At the cross country regionals five hours away in Lubbock on Oct. 24, RISD teams competed for their shot at state, and while the Richardson Eagles and Lake Highlands Wildcats gave it their best, these teams ultimately ended their season out west.

Pearce senior Charis Whittington did qualify for the UIL cross country state championships and will represent RISD in Round Rock on Nov. 4. Congratulations and good luck, Charis!

On another exciting night for RISD volleyball, all four teams gave it their all Tuesday. RHS battled Pearce in the final home game for the Eagles, and the Mustangs won 3-1. The Lake Highlands Wildcats went to Irving High School and won 3-0, Heading over to Berkner, the Lady Rams held senior night against Irving Nimitz and swept the Vikings 3-0 to close out the regular season. Congratulations on a victorious season, Rams!

The Eagles, Mustangs and Wildcats volleyball teams all begin the playoffs on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

RHS will battle Arlington Martin at Coppell High School at 5:30 p.m. The Lake Highlands Wildcats will follow at 7 p.m. against Arlington High School.

Pearce will take on South Grand Prairie at Carrollton Newman Smith High School at 6:30 p.m. Pick a game and come cheer on these talented athletes!

Practice has started for all high school girls and boys basketball teams across the district. The Lake Highlands boys team is the No. 4 team in the state and the Richardson boys team is ranked 11th. The community is invited to come out and meet the Eagles and the Wildcats as they host a fun, meet the players event on Nov. 2nd.

Last Thursday, the Berkner community came together to take part in the first Berkner Athletic’s Trunk or Treat event. The night was filled with opportunities to meet athletes from every team at Berkner, learn about upcoming schedules, play games to win candy and simply be with the Ramily. Kudos to Coach Bryant for making this event a reality for the BHS athletes and community.

At RHS last Friday, RISD Executive Director of Athletics Leslie Slovak and Director, Kevin Pitts made a surprise appearance in the MAC while the freshman football team was practicing. After a quick speech from Head Coach Greg Pels, Slovak and Pitts honored Freshman Coach Brealand Gray as RISD Coach of the Month. Congratulations Coach Gray!

Friday Night Lights looked a bit different under the rain to wrap up the week, but the Pearce Mustangs, Berkner Rams and Richardson Eagles fought hard regardless.

The Eagles battled district leading Highland Park at Highlander Stadium and after the rain delay, fell to a very tough Scots team, 31-0.

The Pearce Mustangs beat Irving High School 45-13, placing them 4-3 in District 7-6A. Great win Mustangs!

Finally, the Berkner Rams beat Irving Nimitz 47-27. If the Rams beat MacArthur in the final district game on Nov. 4, they will secure the final playoff spot. “If they win, they’re in.” Good luck, Rams!
