Districtwide Wi-Fi Upgrades

RISD upgraded more than 4,100 access points across all district facilities, replacing older Cisco 3800 series access points with Cisco 9100 series access points that are designed to have higher capacity and offer access to the newest Wi-Fi standard.

The new access points are managed by and operated from one consolidated controller. A Cisco 9800 series wireless controller is at the core of the wireless infrastructure. Cisco said some of the benefits of the upgrade allow for better ways to analyze visitor behavior, while making guest Wi-Fi access easier.

The school district also refreshed its internet pathway, upgrading the core switching, firewalls, and internet routers. This is expected to doubled total available bandwidth to 60Gbps, or billions of bits per second.
