Congratulations to the Junior World Affairs Council at Lake Highlands High School on a top 5 finish at the 2024 WorldQuest competition.

Each year, World Affairs Councils around the country host academic WorldQuest competitions for high school students. Out of 96 teams from public, private, and charter schools across North Texas, one of the Lake Highlands teams placed fifth in the regional competition. This year’s competition featured topics such as Middle East realignment, the High Seas Treaty, South Korea, the global south, and sports and diplomacy.

The LHHS Junior World Affairs Council started eight years ago and is affiliated with the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth’s Global Young Leaders program. The club seeks to increase students’ global competence and knowledge of international affairs, increase civic engagement, and set youth on pathways to become global leaders of the future.

In November, the LHHS JWAC chapter partnered with a nonprofit called Wine to Water to assemble and ship water filters to areas of the world that do not have clean water access, according to LHHS teacher Emily Ramirez, who is the club sponsor.

Ramirez said several Lake Highlands students have been recognized with the 20 Under 20 Award from the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth, and current chapter president, Julian Villamar-Robbins, was additionally awarded the Global Gateway Grant which provided the initial funds for the Wine to Water project.

Congratulations to Ms. Ramirez, the students, and their families! #RISDBelieves
