Back To School & First Day Safety Reminders

Whether joining the RISD family for the first time, or returning for another great year of learning and growth, all parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to become familiar with how RISD schools approach safety and security. The district offers a comprehensive website and FAQs for parents to understand the different efforts and protocols that RISD has in place to prevent, deter, respond to, or mitigate the impact of a variety of safety-related situations.

Safety Protocols
During the course of a school year, campuses around RISD may be placed in different types of safety protocols in response to different situations. Staff and students prepare for different protocols throughout each school year, including on “I Know What To Do Days” that focus on preparedness and practice. Parents can learn what to expect in different protocols here.

The most serious of safety situations are emergencies that would involve law enforcement or fire/rescue response. While such situations are rare, parents can benefit from knowing what to expect in advance, and also ensuring their child’s school has the most up to date parent/guardian contact information.

Parents and Visitors To Schools
All visitors, including parents, who wish to enter a school during the school day should bring a photo identification and anticipate a background check through the Verkada visitor management system. Note: On the first day of school only, parents of students in grades PK-2 are welcome to walk their child to their classroom.

Using School Facilities
RISD welcomes our community to use fields, running tracks, tennis courts, and playgrounds outside of school hours. During school days, the use of such school facilities is reserved for and limited to students and staff/coaches.

Everyone – parents, students, employees, and community members – shares ownership in keeping our schools safe for teaching, learning, and academic growth. If you see or hear something that might impact the safety of any RISD school, or any student/staff member, please say something by letting any employee know. And if a situation is urgent, call 911.

If you have questions about the safety and security at your child’s school, please contact your principal or RISD Safety & Security at 469-593-0911 or security@risd.org.
