RISD Seeks Input on Calendar Proposals for 26-27 and 27-28 Academic School Years

At the October 30, 2025 Board of Trustees Work session, district leadership shared three proposed calendars for 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 Academic Years. These options were developed by a calendar committee, which includes parents and community representatives from all four Learning Communities, staff and central leadership.

Options presented meet the minimum requirements for the 75,600 minutes as required by law and allow for “banked” minutes in case of an emergency.

Feedback provided by the calendar committee included the following:

  • Instructional needs must drive the calendar
  • Consider parent/family implications for childcare, etc.
  • Balance of days in each 9 weeks; balance of days each semester
  • Professional Development is positioned throughout the year to support teacher practice
  • Complete first semester before the winter break
  • Utilize professional development day on election day
  • Consider athletic/fine arts summer practice calendar
  • Ending the school year before Memorial Day

Comparisons and differences for the proposed calendar options for both years include: first day of school, number of days off in October and February, return date from Winter Break for students, and the last day of school.
