Each April, RISD celebrates the Month of the Military Child, when communities across the country recognize the resilience and strength of students whose families are connected to the military. In RISD, recognition goes beyond the month and is reflected in the dedication and specialized support we provide to help military-connected students thrive. Students often face unique challenges, including frequent relocation, changes in school curriculum, and a parent’s deployment.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has recognized Berkner High School and Lake Highlands High School with the prestigious Texas Purple Star Campus designation for their exceptional commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families. This designation is given to schools that demonstrate an extraordinary level of dedication to meeting the unique needs of students whose parents serve in the United States military.
As a Purple Star Campus, schools provide a comprehensive system of support to assist students and families, provide professional development to staff focused on the needs of military students, and have a dedicated campus military liaison to assist students and families. “The sacrifices and commitments of the military students within the RISD community speak volumes as they strive to become better citizens and future leaders worthy of emulation amongst their peers and their families, to whom they represent,” says CSM Ret. Maurice Peebles, who is the Purple Star Site Lead and Senior Army/JROTC Instructor at Berkner High School. These efforts support a smooth transition and a sense of belonging and connection among students, fostering their well-being and academic growth.
Military families make tremendous sacrifices in the service of our country, and RISD remains committed to supporting those who serve and providing an environment for every child, every day to thrive.
