What the assessment is

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a free, nationally recognized career exploration assessment that measures students’ developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success.
Although the military uses it for enlistment qualification, the ASVAB is not just a military test. Through the ASVAB Career Exploration Program, students gain access to personalized tools that help them:
  • Explore career pathways based on strengths
  • Understand their aptitude in key academic and technical areas.
  • Make informed decisions about postsecondary and workforce options.
The ASVAB is one of the approved CCMR indicators in Texas.

Who takes it

The ASVAB is open to:

  • 10th-grade students
  • 11th-grade students
  • 12th-grade students
Students do not have to be interested in military service. Any student who wants to identify strengths, explore careers, or meet CCMR indicators is welcome to participate.

When it’s offered

RISD offers the ASVAB free of charge during the fall and spring semesters.

2025 - 2026 Districtwide Testing Days:

  • Monday, October 27th, 2025, and Thursday, February 12th, 2026.
  • Administered at all four traditional high schools
Testing takes place during the school day and is administered online. Testing dates and locations may vary yearly and will be communicated directly to students and families by their home campus.

Registration process

To participate in the ASVAB, students must:

  1. Complete the district ASVAB registration form sent out by campus.
  2. Receive confirmation from their campus.
  3. Report to the designated testing location at the scheduled date and time.
There are no fees or military commitment associated with taking the ASVAB.

How results are shared

Students receive personalized ASVAB score reports that highlight academic strengths, technical skills, and career aptitude matches.
  • Counselors review results with students to support college and career planning.
  • Students gain access to the ASVAB Career Exploration Portal, which provides:
    • Recommended career clusters
    • Job exploration tools Education and training pathways
ASVAB results are not automatically shared with military recruiters.
