In RISD, school librarians are knowns as LITEs, or Library and Information Technology Educators. All of the LITEs in RISD have classroom teaching experience and a master’s in library and information technology. April is School Library Month, and RISD will be highlighting some of the wonderfully talented LITEs across the district all month.

Denise Brewer is in her 18th year in education, eighth as a librarian, and fourth at Forest Meadow Junior High School.

“The most important thing I do as a LITE is to create a culture of literacy on our campus, but my favorite thing is developing programs that get teachers and students excited about reading and using the library’s resources.”

Principal Susan Burt said Mrs. Brewer fosters a love of reading in students and encourages them to explore the world of literature.

“She hosts book talks, reading challenges, staff book clubs and so much more. Mrs. Brewer’s passion for creating an environment for all is evident in everything she does. She is truly one of a kind, and I love watching her share her passion for books with our students,” Burt said.

“Every student needs our libraries to include a diverse collection of books that reflect the experience of every student,” Brewer said. “My work as a LITE gives me the opportunity to ensure that every RISD student feels included and valued in a library full of books that tell stories that matter to them. We’ve worked hard to create an inclusive space that every kid, every day – even reluctant readers – wants to spend time in.”
