Google Changes Data Privacy Requirements

Google is making changes to help protect student data from those who may not meet Google’s data privacy and security requirements.

Apps and websites using the “Sign In with Google” button and sharing personally identifiable information, such as name, ID number, and email will be restricted in two categories:

  • Applications and websites identified as potentially not suitable for students under 18. Many of these sites and apps are not available through RISD’s network, but could be accessed with home wifi or cell phones.
  • All other applications and websites which allow “Sign In with Google” to be used.

What does this mean for Richardson ISD students? Starting on Oct. 23, RISD parents and guardians can expect log-on restrictions on websites and apps that have previously used an @g.risd.org Google account to sign in.

RISD Instructional Technology is working with all district departments to identify the educational resources that are district-approved and making changes to allow access only to these approved apps and websites.

If you suspect your student may have used a district Google account (@g.risd.org) to sign-in to a non-educational website or app, please change that email address. Students can find a list of all sign-ins at myaccount.google.com. This does not affect any other email addresses – only those ending in @g.risd.org.

Please note that at no point will RISD grant an exception to allow a student to use a Google sign-on for an app or website that Google has identified as being exclusively for adults over 18.  There are no exceptions to this rule.

RISD appreciates the work Google is doing to protect student data privacy and security. These new log-on steps and processes will help ensure that RISD students remain protected when using Google accounts to sign in to appropriate educational resources.
