Home Gun Safety Storage Tips

Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, their families, and staff is our highest priority. Texas law requires school districts to share important information about the safe storage of firearms at home with parents and guardians, three times a year. The information in this letter includes important safety tips and recommendations on how a parent can talk to his/her child and others about the safe storage of firearms at home.

In Texas, it’s against the law to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm. Under Texas Penal Code 46.13, a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence:

  • Failed to secure the firearm; or
  • Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access

Safe gun storage at home is critical to preventing suicide, unintentional shootings, and other tragedies. You can learn more and find additional resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

As a reminder, firearms are not allowed in any of our RISD schools or offices.

We appreciate your continued partnership as we strive to make RISD a safe learning environment for our students where they can thrive.
