Interim Superintendent Safety Update

Key points of the message include:

  • Recap of lockdown situation at Berkner High School yesterday – RISD’s safety processes worked as intended, and appreciation to law enforcement partners, resource officers, safety & security staff, teachers, students, and employees for acting quickly and as planned.
  • No weapon was found on campus nor school property, and police have not found evidence nor an indication of a plan or intent to harm anyone.
  • RISD administrators first priority in any safety situation is acting to keep students and employees safe, followed by sharing accurate information with parents and staff.
  • An unfortunate error resulted in an unrelated school accidentally sending a districtwide message yesterday that created confusion among many parents – to reiterate – ticketed guests are welcome at RISD’s graduation ceremonies this weekend, as previously planned.
  • RISD has requested additional law enforcement presence at this weekend’s graduation ceremonies, and spectator guidelines, including the clear bag policy, will be strictly enforced. Graduation information is available at web.risd.org/graduation.
  • The district is beginning the process to facilitate a safety audit of RISD schools, buildings, plans, and protocols. While RISD’s current safety efforts are robust, this audit will allow a qualified third party to assess RISD’s safety planning and efforts to identify any areas of potential improvement.
