National School Lunch Week & Farm to School Month

The Greatest Food Show - Big Flavors for Little Foodies - Dream Big, Taste Everything. National School Lunch Week - October 12 - 16, 2026

Step right up for a delicious celebration! Richardson ISD (RISD) is turning up the flavor October 12–16 for National School Lunch Week with “The Greatest Food Show: Big Flavors for Little Foodies!” while celebrating Farm to School Month throughout October.

Inspired by the national theme, “Cafeteria Circus,” RISD is showcasing the nutritious, delicious meals that fuel student success. With approximately 4 million meals served each year, RISD Child Nutrition brings great taste and good nutrition to students every day.

The fun continues with the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Farm Fresh Challenge, which celebrates locally grown foods and the farmers who bring them to our tables. RISD regularly serves Texas-grown cabbage, cucumbers, carrots, heirloom cherry tomatoes and local dairy products.

Throughout October, students will explore Texas-grown fruits and vegetables through trivia and crossword puzzles. At Merriman Park Elementary, students will also get to sample Texas-grown purple potatoes and discover what makes these colorful spuds a delicious nutrient-packed powerhouse!

“Every school lunch is packed with mouthwatering possibilities, from colorful fruits and veggies to hearty whole grains and refreshing milk—all meeting federal nutrition standards,” said Isabell Franzia, RISD Child Nutrition Dietitian. “Celebrations like these let us spark excitement about trying new foods through showing students and families how school meals can be a flavorful, nutritious and fun part of the school day.” Check out our menus to see what your little foodie will taste this week!

From fresh-from-the-farm favorites to fun food discoveries, RISD is making every bite count! The district encourages students to enjoy delicious school meals every day and celebrates its dedicated Child Nutrition team for keeping students nourished, energized and ready to learn.
