RISD Considering Red Brick Renovations

RISD Admin building

The district is beginning asbestos abatement work in advance of proposed renovations to the iconic red brick building on Greenville Avenue, which currently serves as the district administration building. The 107 year old building has been in continual service to students and employees since it opened in 1914 as RISD’s K-11 school serving the entire district. The proposed renovations are not part of the Bond 2021 package and the abatement work is being funded through Bond 2016 abatement funds, which was approved by RISD trustees on May 3.

“The Red Brick Building is a recognized and valued symbol of RISD and ties into the district’s history and traditions,” said assistant superintendent of operations Sandra Hayes. “From a practical standpoint, maintaining a working building that is more than a century old to meet the modern needs of the school district requires periodic upkeep and renovation. The building was originally constructed at a cost of $16,000 after passage of a 1913 bond, and after more than 100 years of use, represents one of the best taxpayer investments in the history of our community.”

The proposed work would move offices and create a larger area for RISD trustees to hold public work sessions. Most of the work would be completed over the summer and potentially be ready by October. Most Administration Building departments and offices would continue to operate during abatement and renovation work, while some employees would be temporarily displaced.

RISD trustees are expected to consider approval of the renovations in June. Please click here to see the proposed renovations.
