RISD Legislative Corner – June 5

Latest updates on the Texas legislative session

The 89th Texas legislative session is over. First and foremost, your voices mattered in support of RISD and public education this session – we are thankful for our parents and community members who took time to contact our legislators on behalf of the students and teachers in RISD.

It was a challenging session for public schools as we looked to our elected officials to bring public education funding back to 2019 levels and to provide much needed support to the teaching profession. In the end (the very end) public schools received an unprecedented level of new funding for which we are very grateful. The funding will reduce our deficit, and we will continue to look for ways to operate as efficiently as possible while offering the educational opportunities that our community expects and children deserve.

We’re also grateful for the strong support public schools received in improving the discipline code via House Bill 6, so that our teachers and school administrators will have more needed flexibility in handling student discipline.

The RISD Board of Trustees received a final legislative presentation at the June 5 meeting, with highlights from the 89th session and how legislation will impact RISD.
