Richardson West Junior High 8th grader, Barrington Smith, has been awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Scholarship, a program designed to support exceptionally promising students. Smith is one of only 65 scholars selected nationwide this year.
The program offers comprehensive financial support for school: academic advising, access to Cooke-sponsored summer programs, internships, and other learning opportunities. The scholarship provides up to $40,000 per year for up to four years to cover tuition, living expenses, books, and other costs. The Young Scholars program is designed to help students maximize their high school experiences, connect with other high-achieving scholars, and go on to thrive in top colleges.
Students are selected through an application that considers their academic achievement, leadership, and demonstrated persistence towards accomplishing their goals and overcoming challenges.
Smith credits his involvement in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) for the opportunity, and for his growth and success in school. AVID is a college and career readiness system that begins as early as kindergarten, which teaches and reinforces academic behaviors and higher-level thinking at a young age.
“All I have to thank is AVID and my wonderful teacher, Ms. Udenze,” says Barrington Smith. “My time in AVID has been nothing but growth, because I am surrounded by people who are always there to help me, are there for me when I need them, and who always enhance my skills in organization, readiness, and leadership. It has helped me in other classes by bringing up my grades, and has helped me get out of my shell.”
“Barrington is the perfect example of what AVID stands for,” says Eboni Udenze, AVID Coordinator at Richardson West Junior High. “He is humble, intelligent, and hardworking. He never seeks the spotlight but always puts in the effort. I’m so proud to see his dedication paying off.”
Barrington’s hope for the Young Scholars program is to not only make valuable connections, but also to exceed his goals and be the best person he can be. His dream is to grow up to be a mechanical engineer who can help make an impact on the world.
