STAAR 3-8 Results Now Available Through Focus

Spring 2023 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Grades 3-8 results will be available for Richardson ISD students beginning August 16.

As a reminder to parents, the STAAR tests were redesigned by the state of Texas for the 2022-2023 school year.  On the redesigned STAAR, students were exposed to new question types including multiselect, multipart, graphing and other mathematical modeling aides, inline answer choices, drag and drop, matching, text entry, short constructed response (RLA, Science, and Social Studies) and extended constructed response (RLA only).  In addition to new question types, the redesign added cross-curricular passages and evidence-based writing in all levels of the Reading-Language Arts test.  Needless to say, students experienced a very different testing experience last Spring than they have in the past.

While the redesign was intended to match student experiences in the classroom, the new assessment was 100% computer-based. With the new format, it is likely that different students responded differently to these question types. When reviewing results, it’s important that parents keep in mind that this was a new testing experience for all Texas public school students.

As a result of all of the changes, it’s also important to remember that individual student results of this past year’s STAAR redesign and results from previous versions of the STAAR assessment should not be compared. There are many differences between the two tests which may impact a student’s results.

RISD parents can access STAAR results through RISD’s Focus Parent Portal using these instructions:

1. Log In to Focus Parent portal at https://web.risd.org/focus/

2. Click My Child

3. Click Child Info

4. Click Assessment Rpt Cards

5. Scroll to Texas Test Scores section

6. Select Click here to go to the Texas Student Portal (available in English or Spanish)

If you do not have access to Parent Portal, please go to https://web.risd.org/focus/ for directions to create an account.

Richardson ISD staff members will review each child’s performance on the STAAR test as one indicator of academic progress.  It is one of a variety of academic indicators used by RISD educators to monitor the growth of each student.  RISD will continue to use multiple data points to adjust instructional design to ensure every child is growing academically.

The STAAR redesign is one of several changes at the state level this year that will result in a brand new A-F Accountability Rating for each campus and district in Texas. RISD shared last spring how the redesigned test and updated accountability system are expected to impact school and district ratings.

Parents with questions about understanding 2023 STAAR results are encouraged to review this information or contact their child’s teacher or principal.
