During the April 2 Board meeting, RISD leadership presented proposed budget efficiencies for the 2026–2027 school year aimed at reducing expenditures by $25.7 million.
Like many Texas school districts, RISD faces challenging decisions about resource allocation as revenue growth lags behind rising expenses.
“Decisions about reducing the budget are difficult, and we understand the impact they can have. We are approaching this process with transparency and care, keeping our students at the center of every choice—considering both their needs and the support our teachers and campus leaders require to help them succeed,” said Superintendent Tabitha Branum. “We remain committed to directing our resources where they matter most: supporting teachers and campus staff, who work every day to help our students learn and grow.”
Over the past two years, the district has focused on $16 million in budget reductions, primarily at the central and administrative levels, to minimize the impact on classrooms. Key strategies have included:
- Campus consolidation and implementation of Project Rightsize
- Reducing department budgets and streamlining central operations
- Absorbing vacant positions and reducing or eliminating certain stipends
- Scaling back non-essential programs and contracted external services
The additional proposed efficiencies for 2026–2027 align with recommendations from the Community Budget Steering Committee and include:
- Additional Reductions in central district expenses
- Implementing a standardized staffing model for elementary and secondary support
- Aligning Central Office positions with current district enrollment levels
- Reducing campus support positions
- Adopting a more efficient secondary schedule
“Our commitment continues to be our North Star Goal: ensuring every student, teacher, and leader meets or surpasses their academic growth targets,” said Board President Chris Poteet. “Guided by this goal, we will continue to focus on maintaining a secure and supportive learning environment across all schools while sustaining the programs that are most valued by our community. Thank you for being part of the RISD family and for your continued support as we work together to ensure the long-term financial health of Richardson ISD.”
