Changes To ‘Sign in with Google’

sign in with google

In October, Google updated its privacy policy regarding the restriction of Google educational domain accounts (such as your @g.risd.org email) being used to sign in to third-party websites and apps.

Google made the change to help protect student data from applications and websites that may not meet their data privacy and security requirements when using the ‘Sign In with Google’ button and sharing personally identifiable information, such as name, ID number, email and access to Drive, etc.

After getting input from central departments and campuses to identify district resources, Technology evaluated all the sites accessed by g.risd.org users.

When RISD returns from break on Jan. 8, the allowable websites and applications for student login will be limited.  This list has two tabs:

  • District resources – District resources are ones the district already has a contract agreement in place to allow for student logins.
  • Available resources under evaluation –  Access will continue for this school year. These resources will be reviewed and evaluated for continuation in the 2024-2025 school year.

Click this link for the list.

Please note:

  • The action is not blocking websites. It is only blocking the ability for students to login and create an account on the website.
  • This change in access does not affect student resources rostered and accessed through Classlink.
  • RISD employees have different permissions than students.  Students are limited to logging in only to district and available resources.
  • Google has identified some websites and applications as potentially not suitable for students under 18. These are restricted for students to “Sign In with Google” by Google automatically.

Staff should always evaluate how they will be using a resource prior to creating a login. Your RISD Gmail account should only be used professionally. If you’re using a website or application for personal use, please use a personal Gmail address when using “Sign In with Google.”

Examples for using your personal Gmail include logging in to a fast-food app or shopping site, and creating a profile on a home buying/selling site, or setting up a virtual assistant at home.
