The RISD School Health Advisory Council is considering the Human Growth and Development curriculum for fifth and sixth-grade students. Lessons will be taught during the latter part of the spring semester. The SHAC committee is reviewing Proctor & Gamble video lessons along with RISD created curriculum.
RISD parents and the community are invited to preview the curriculum and provide input to the committee before it is presented to RISD trustees for consideration. These lessons are “Opt In” for fifth and sixth-grade students, meaning parents would be required to opt their student in to receive the lessons, or students will not receive the information.
The curriculum aims to educate students in an age-appropriate manner on human growth and development and empower them to make the healthiest choices. Please note that these lessons are not brand new, but have been updated – RISD has been using Proctor & Gamble video lessons for several years.
The curriculum is online and can be viewed via the links below. When presented, boys and girls will be separated, and the fifth-grade boys and girls lessons are different. The sixth-grade video lesson is identical and covers both male and female reproductive systems, although it is still presented separately to boys and girls.
