PIP Intern Enjoys Detective Work in Accounting

Richardson High School senior Angie Rojas is working with Anthony Le in the RISD Accounting Office this semester as part of the RISD Professional Internship Program.

Rojas plans to study accounting in college and enjoys working on and reviewing assignments. She is checking projects on Excel, reviewing invoice-tracking reports, looking at pending three-way matches for purchases, and shadowing people to gain a broader understanding of the office environment.

Le said she has run queries in the district’s financial system, generated reports, created an invoice template, compared invoice and general ledger data, searched for variances in student and campus activity accounts, helped reconcile vehicle data in the asset system, and helped verify accuracy of travel documents.

“Angie has been doing great, and we really appreciate having her intern with the RISD Finance Department,” Le said. His department has hosted multiple interns for about seven years through the PIP program that allows students to gain experience and exposure in their desired workforce before college.

“I never realized how much detective work goes into accounting,” Rojas said. “It’s not just numbers all the time. There is a lot of verifying information, and sometimes, there’s a lot of missing pieces like a puzzle.”
