After several months of review by the Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC), RISD Trustees adopted the recommended instructional materials for the district’s Human Growth and Development curriculum.
The age-appropriate, research-based lessons are designed to help young people make healthy and informed human growth and development decisions. The RISD Trustees approved three different curriculums: the 5th and 6th grade Human Growth and Development curriculum; 7-12 grade students Choosing the Best, facilitated through the Health 1 course; and 6-12 grade RISD Counselor-created lessons for the prevention of Child Abuse, Family Violence, Dating Violence, and Sex Trafficking.
Parents will have the option to opt their students in to participate in each of these curriculums. Additionally, parents will have the right to remove their students from any part of the curriculum. The content of RISD’s human growth and development curriculum was reviewed and followed the recommended process as required by Texas Education Code.
Each campus will communicate more information regarding the adopted curriculum and instructional components this spring, including the opt-in process. Please click here for more information about the work of SHAC and the Human Growth and Development curriculum adoption process.
