Richardson ISD schools and offices will be closed on Friday, Feb. 3, due to campus and travel conditions related to this week’s winter storms. This decision was made based on a variety of factors, with the safety of students and staff as the top priority:
- While conditions on many main roads in RISD improved Thursday, conditions on some neighborhood streets around the district remain dangerous, and some school walkways and parking lots remain icy.
- Navigating these conditions is a serious consideration for students driving and walking to school.
- Due to frozen diesel fuel pumps, some of RISD’s bus fleet cannot be prepared to transport students on Friday. This issue would be compounded by a delayed start, as the same buses are used for elementary, junior high, and high school transportation. Fewer buses in a compressed schedule would impact all schools.
- The district has heard from teachers and staff residing in other parts of North Texas that they are unable to safely get to work Friday.
- With temperatures forecast to drop below freezing again overnight, some roads and parking lots that are currently passable are projected to become iced over in the morning.
With conditions expected to improve throughout the day, some Friday evening games and events will occur as scheduled – coaches and sponsors will communicate details to their groups.
Snow make-up day information will be shared in early spring once all snow days are known. Make-up information about school events and activities will be shared with parents and students by campus staff, as needed. Decisions about postponed district events will be shared when available.
