17 RISD Seniors Named Dell Scholar Semifinalists

AVID

Seventeen Richardson ISD AVID students reached the semifinals of this year’s Dell Scholar program and remain in the running for $20,000, a laptop and ongoing educational support.

Since 2009, 69 RISD seniors have won Dell scholarships. RISD AVID Director Joan Swim said these students achieved this level of national recognition due to academic rigor, ambition and perseverance.

This year’s semifinalists include Cindy Ruto, Crystal Castaneda, Shuibe Abdu, and Nallely Medina of Berkner; Jose Cartagena of Lake Highlands; Marcy Hernandez, Jenny Gallegos, Celeste Rojo, Ana Chamu, Kenneth Ly, Juliana Benitez, Juanita Ramirez, and Rosa Benitez of Pearce; and Hilal Salahudeen, Awwab Siddiqui, Adam Dominguez, and Ahmed Khan of RHS.

The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation began the scholarship program in 2004 to assist highly motivated, underprivileged high school students. From the start, it was designed as a college-completion program, which offers support services that go beyond a scholarship check. The 2021 Dell Scholars will be announced March 16.

Congratulations to these RISD seniors, their teachers and their families. #RISDGreatness
