CLA Registration Opens Feb.1
On Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m., child registration will open for RISD’s employee Child Learning Academies for the 2023-24 school year. RISD’s CLA webpage has been updated, and employees are encouraged to review the information and FAQ to learn more about the registration process, lottery, CLA locations, and more.
Registration for initial CLA seat placements will be open for two weeks, from Feb. 1 to Feb. 15. If demand exceeds available seats, a lottery will be conducted to award initial seats. Registration takes place through the CLA webpage.
Committee to Consider CLA Names
A committee will consider names for both employee child learning academy sites, and is seeking naming suggestions from RISD staff or community members. Anyone may complete this form to suggest names for the CLA location at 1231 Belt Line Road, the location within Canyon Creek Elementary at 2100 Copper Ridge Drive, or both. Suggestions will be accepted through February 10, 2023. The naming committee will evaluate suggestions and make recommendations for RISD trustees to consider in March, 2023.

Katy Phinney, who in addition to managing the district’s Pre-K programs, will be leading the work around RISD employee daycares as the Coordinating Director of Early Childhood Services. Construction is underway at two locations for high quality daycare for RISD employees. The programs are tentatively being called Child Learning Academies (CLAs) until formally named by RISD Trustees.
- The first employee child learning academy will be located at 1231 W. Belt Line Road in the former Newcomer Center Building, across from Richardson High School. It is projected to open in August of 2023 for the 2023-24 school year.
- The second CLA location, within Canyon Creek Elementary, is projected to open in January 2024 in time for the second semester of the 2023-24 year.

To help RISD plan for the CLA openings, all employee parents with potential interest in having their child/children attend one of the Child Learning Academies, please complete the employee interest survey here.

The child learning academies are one of RISD’s staff recruitment and retention tools, and are open to Richardson ISD employees. RISD does not operate daycare programs for the general public, and offers Pre-Kindergarten opportunities for RISD families as early as age 3.
The early childhood services team continues to work on details related to enrollment, including a lottery system if demand exceeds space available. The district is not yet accepting formal employee registration, but that is coming early second semester. In the meantime, all potentially interested employees should complete the interest survey above, and questions can be directed to Katy.Phinney@risd.org.
In late October, Rachel Harris, was named the Child Learning Academy Director overseeing the daily operations of planned and future RISD employee daycare locations. Harris joins the team with extensive early childhood and child care experience, currently serving as the Early Childhood Specialist for the RISD Family Literacy Center.
